I feel a deep connection to handwritten relics and photographs. The thought of losing these things over time makes me incredibly sad, as if the people and memories are being lost as well.
This project was a gift for my mom. It is a photograph of her parents when they were young. My grandfather was named Herald, and his wife was Ruth Ann. Everyone called her “George” in school, and that nickname stayed with her the rest of her life. She died before my brother and I were born so we never got a chance to know her. Several years ago, I wrote my grandpa a letter asking him to tell me the story of how they met in an effort to learn more about her. He ended his letter with “We truly loved each other and were as one.” It was such a beautiful statement. I took that and added it to the old photo I had. It was missing something though. I wanted a connection with her. My dad was able to find an old letter that she had written and had signed with “Herald & George”. I added that to the photo and it was complete. I surprised my mom with this printed on wood. She loved it, and even though she hadn’t seen her mother’s handwriting in over 40 years, she recognized it immediately.
I hope you can enjoy and appreciate my grandparents’ love for each other and feel a connection to them and their story through this artwork.
